What is social entrepreneurship?

A social entrepreneur is a person with innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. They are ambitious and persistent, tackling major social issues and offering new ideas for wide-scale change.

Social entrepreneurship is based on the conviction that businesslike methods are useful and necessary to reach social goals. Business sense and public welfare go hand in hand. Just as commercial entrepreneurs create entirely new industries, social entrepreneurs create new radical solutions to social problems and implement them on a large scale. They see opportunities that others don’t and improve systems, invent new approaches and create solutions to change society for the better.

Social entrepreneurs are both visionaries and practitioners, seeking methods to realize their vision. They have the skills and drive of the entrepreneur, combined with a vision to change the world. Or as Bill Drayton, founder and CEO of Ashoka, has said: ”Social entrepreneurs are not content just to give a fish or teach how to fish. They will not rest until they have revolutionized the fishing industry.”
